After Argentina's independence, many other Latin American countries soon followed suit, thanks to José de San Martín. In 1817 San Martín lead his army from the Andes and triumphed over the Spanish in Santiago. San Martín began an attack on Peru and within a year was able to capture the capital and declare Peru's independence. He then attempted to rid Peru of the Spanish forces. He received the aid of Simone Bolivar who had liberated Venezuela, Columbia, and Ecuador. However, in a mysteriously disputed conflict, San Martin left the fate of Peru up to Bolivar. Bolivar succeeded in freeing Peru by 1824.
